As the lyrics of Johnny Nash’s famous song, ‘I can see clearly now,’ my cataract surgery has been a resounding success, coupled with treating astigmatism. I am jubilant to see again with 20/20 vision and amazed at the now innovative, less intrusive laser cataract surgery.

Diagnosed four years ago with the early onset of cataracts, I avidly read about the condition, knowing little about it at the time. But I became less concerned, learning it is a common vision impairment amongst older adults. However, though progressive, is treatable with surgery. That it is a 10-15 minute operation is astonishing (providing of course, there are no complications).

Yearly Ophthalmologist appointment checks monitored the cataracts. But consequently, after four years, I exhibited the typical symptoms of cloudy, blurry, short-sighted, poor night vision, seeing a halo around lights, sunlight glaring, and double vision. Explicit signs having the operation was needed.

I will not ad nauseam discuss cataracts further, because information is available online. However, I recommend regular eye tests, which are considered essential from age 40 to 60.

Having experienced cataracts and knowing how treatable they are, it is preposterous the number of people worldwide who go blind unnecessarily. According to the World Health Organization, about 17% of people worldwide have cataracts. They also confirm that cataracts are responsible for over 51% of blindness in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The WHO has a blindness programme that provides technical support to Member states in developing comprehensive eye care systems to address the burden of blindness.

I am thankful for my returned 20/20 vision, which allows me to see and make sense of the amazing world around me – keeping balance and maintaining the circadian rhythm. Equally, how much I have taken for granted the wonder of sight and can’t image being unable to see dazzling sunlight, rainbow sunsets, glowing full moon, cerulean blue sky, beautiful flowers, trees, azure oceans, loved ones and so much more.

An apt and human emotion quote:

“Eyes are more accurate witnesses than ear” (Heraclitus)
