Do you have a happy place that brings you joy, relaxation and peace?

A happy place can be physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual. It is a refuge of self-care that instantly produces stress relief. It allows one to think clearly and feel calm and relaxed. It could be meditation, a walk in nature, music, art, a massage, writing, reading, exercise, or a relaxing soak in the bath with a favourite scented fragrance. Or even be a dedicated quiet space in your home that becomes a sanctuary. Being diverse, it offers multiple choices based on life’s circumstances.

Akin to having a happy place, wellness is now a buzzword and a popular, fashionable, fast-growing market. Its premise is a holistic approach to balancing the self as a lifelong journey, offering and advocating physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.

We all know of a family member or friend who swears by any one or more of the practices as mentioned above, advocating its benefits. For me, a much-loved happy place is a tropical beach. I adore and enjoy its ambience, brilliant, golden rays of shimmering sunshine and its enveloping warmth. It’s caressing passing breeze.

The sea’s sparkling azure, turquoise, or greenish blue, reflecting the sun, offers a refreshing, cool respite from the heat. I become mesmerised by its symphony, from its gentle rolling waves, rhythmic ebbing and flowing, to powerful crashing waves, reflecting the changing moods of the wind and weather.

I adore the soft, warm sand shifting underfoot as I stroll along the shore. Some shores transitioning to scattered pebbles and shells (sometimes I collect the coloured glass and shells). Watching the pelicans and frigate birds as they circle above on the lookout, deftly swooping down to fish, is fascinating. The palms, sea grapes, coconuts, and other trees add to what I consider one of nature’s many scenic landscapes.

As the day fades with sunset, I love watching the sky transform into a pink, orange, and violet canvas. The heat is less intense, and the gentle rippling sea continues its melody. I consider my stay at the beach therapeutic and feel physically, spiritually, and mentally cleansed.

You too can identify and prioritise what, when or where your happy place is.
